# Do non-hormonal treatments reduce premenstrual syndrome symptoms?

Yes, in this study, non-hormonal treatments including magnesium and herbal medicine reduced PMS symptoms in 68.6% of women. However, the study was small with no control group, so we cannot be completely certain the improvement was caused by treatment.

 Early or limited evidence

35 women aged 23-38 with diagnosed premenstrual syndrome

## What they did

Researchers studied 35 women aged 23-38 with diagnosed PMS. The women received treatment that included magnesium (Magnikum), herbal teas, a venotonic (Normoven), and antiprostaglandins during the second half of their menstrual cycle for 3 menstrual cycles. They measured symptom severity using PMS diaries before and after treatment.

## What they found

Before treatment, women's PMS diary scores averaged 23.4±6.7 points. After treatment, scores averaged 10.1±7.2 points. After one month of treatment, 28.6% reported improvement. After completing treatment, 68.6% reported improvement. Of the 35 women, 57.1% (20 women) showed significant improvement on a follow-up questionnaire, while 42.9% (15 women) showed no significant changes.

## What it means for you

Magnesium and venotonic medications combined with other treatments may help reduce PMS symptoms. However, because the study had no control group and women received multiple treatments at once, we cannot be certain which treatment caused the improvement or whether improvement would have happened anyway.
