# How common are PMS and PMDD, and who is more likely to get them?

About 10.3% of women had PMS and 3.1% had PMDD. Both were strongly linked with poor physical health and psychological distress. Rates were higher in unmarried women and those aged 35-44.

 Early or limited evidence

3,913 women aged 15-54 in Switzerland

## What they did

3,913 Swiss women aged 15-54 answered survey questions about PMS symptoms and how much they interfered with daily life. Researchers looked for patterns by age, marital status, health, and other factors.

## What they found

91% reported at least one premenstrual symptom. 10.3% had PMS and 3.1% had PMDD. Higher rates appeared in unmarried women and those aged 35-44. Both PMS and PMDD were strongly linked with poor physical health and high psychological distress.

## What it means for you

PMS and PMDD are fairly common. The study found strong links between PMS/PMDD and mental and physical health problems, but cannot determine whether PMS causes these problems or if they occur together. Culture and region may affect how women experience and report symptoms.

91%

Had at least one premenstrual symptom

10.3%

Had PMS

3.1%

Had PMDD
