# How common is PMS in female university students, and does it affect mental well-being?

PMS was very common in this group of students, and worse PMS symptoms were linked to lower psychological well-being, though PMS only explained a small part of that well-being.

 Early or limited evidence

226 female university students at Qom University of Medical Sciences, Iran

## What they did

A cross-sectional study of 226 female students at Qom University of Medical Sciences in Iran (2017-2018). Students filled out questionnaires on PMS symptoms, psychological well-being, and basic personal details. Researchers looked for correlations between PMS severity and well-being.

## What they found

37% of students had mild PMS symptoms, 49.8% had moderate symptoms, and 13.2% had severe symptoms. PMS severity was significantly correlated with psychological well-being (p<0.01) and predicted 11% of the variation in well-being.

## What it means for you

PMS is very common among these students and is tied to how well they feel psychologically, but this study only shows a correlation, not that PMS causes poorer well-being. It looked at one university in Iran at one point in time, so results may not apply elsewhere.

49.8%

had moderate PMS symptoms

13.2%

had severe PMS symptoms

11%

of well-being variance predicted by PMS severity
