# Does PMS affect work or family relationships differently?

PMS affected 55.3% of women, mostly with moderate severity. It had greater impact on family relationships than on work. Work status was not linked to PMS severity.

 Early or limited evidence

284 women (location and ages not specified in abstract)

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 284 women assessing PMS prevalence and its effects on occupational and social functioning.

## What they found

55.3% had PMS, with 65% of those having moderate severity. Psychological symptoms included anxiety and irritability. Physical symptoms included fatigue and excessive sleep. PMS had marked impact on family relationships compared to work. No significant link between occupation and syndrome severity (P=0.25).

## What it means for you

PMS is common and affects family relationships more than work. However, the study provided limited details about participants and symptoms. The limited information makes it hard to know how much to rely on these findings.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a common disorder affecting women of reproductive age, characterized by recurrent psychological and physical symptoms in the premenstrual phase. This study assessed the prevalence of PMS and its associated symptoms among a sample of women, analyzing occupational and social factors. The sample included 284 participants, with results showing that 55.3% had PMS, of which 65% were moderate in severity. Psychological (e.g., anxiety, irritability) and physical symptoms (e.g., fatigue, hypersomnia) were predominant, with a marked impact on family relationships compared to occupational aspects. Statistical analyses revealed no significant link between occupation and syndrome severity (P=0.25). The findings highlight the need for awareness programs and psychological support targeting women, particularly in social contexts.
