# What causes PMS in teenage girls?

Most potential causes studied were not linked to PMS in teenage girls. Only diet factors showed a link: caffeine and sugar consumption, and frequent junk food were significantly associated with PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

100 adolescent girls in high schools in Bagalkot, India

## What they did

Cross-sectional descriptive survey of 100 high school girls. Participants completed a premenstrual scale questionnaire and provided information about menstrual history, diet, sleep, and exercise.

## What they found

Most factors showed no significant association: age menstruation started (P=0.29), regular cycle (P=0.27), cycle length (P=0.47), bleeding duration (P=1), family history (P=0.24), medical conditions (p=0.74), sleep hours (p=0.88), exercise frequency (p=0.74). Only two diet factors were significantly associated: caffeine and sugar food consumption (p=0.04) and junk food frequency (p=0.04).

## What it means for you

In teenage girls, diet (especially caffeine, sugar, and junk food) may be linked to PMS, but most other factors studied were not. The study was small and limited to one high school in India, so results may not apply broadly to all teenagers.
