# How common is PMS among teenage girls in India and what factors are associated with it?

Nearly all girls (94.8%) had at least one premenstrual symptom, and 19.3% had moderate to severe PMS. Dysmenorrhea and stress were common and associated with PMS.

 Early or limited evidence

500 girls aged 10 to 23 at schools in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 500 girls aged 10 to 23 at schools in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, India. Girls completed a screening questionnaire for premenstrual symptoms. Researchers also assessed associated factors like stress, dysmenorrhea, and menorrhagia.

## What they found

19.3% had moderate to severe premenstrual symptoms. 94.8% had at least one symptom, with 65.7% having moderate to severe symptoms. Dysmenorrhea was found in 71.2%, menorrhagia (heavy bleeding) in 15.2%. About 41.7% reported disruption of daily activities, and 25.1% had to miss school. 53% had moderate to severe stress.

## What it means for you

PMS symptoms are very common in adolescent girls in India, affecting nearly all to some degree. Many miss school, but most think symptoms are normal and accept them. The study only included one district in one state, so results may not apply to all of India.

94.8%

Had at least one premenstrual symptom

71.2%

Had dysmenorrhea (painful periods)

25.1%

Had to miss school or college
