# Can a GnRH analogue stop premenstrual attacks of hereditary coproporphyria?

Yes. In this one woman, the GnRH analogue stopped her menstrual cycle and her symptoms got much better. She has had only a minor attack once in 5 years but developed weaker bones.

 Early or limited evidence

One 20-year-old woman with hereditary coproporphyria

## What they did

Case report of a 20-year-old woman with hereditary coproporphyria. She needed frequent hospitalization due to premenstrual attacks. She was given intranasal buserelin acetate, a GnRH analogue that stops menstrual cycles.

## What they found

Her symptoms improved dramatically once she stopped having periods. Urinary porphyrin derivatives fell markedly. She remained free from major attacks but had a minor attack once in 5 years. Her bones became weaker (osteopenia) as a side effect of long-term treatment.

## What it means for you

Stopping the menstrual cycle with this hormone medicine can improve symptoms. However, long-term use can weaken bones, which is a concern. This is one woman's experience.
