# Are stress, physical activity, and diet linked to premenstrual symptoms?

Yes. Higher stress was associated with worse PMS, moderate-intensity exercise with better outcomes, and higher red meat consumption with more severe PMS. But this observational study cannot prove these factors cause the changes.

 Moderate study design

Female college students at a university in Hainan, China.

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of college students at a university in Hainan, China. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires measuring perceived stress, physical activity, dietary quality, and PMS symptoms. Linear regression was used to identify factors associated with PMS symptom severity.

## What they found

32.9% of participants reported PMS symptoms. Higher perceived stress score was significantly and positively associated with higher PMS symptoms score. Moderate-intensity physical activity was significantly and negatively associated with PMS symptom score. Among dietary components, higher red meat consumption was significantly associated with lower PMS symptom scores.

## What it means for you

Stress management, regular moderate-intensity exercise, and red meat intake may influence PMS severity. However, this observational study cannot establish causation. We do not know whether these factors cause PMS to worsen or improve, or whether people with severe PMS already have worse stress and dietary patterns. Longitudinal studies are needed.
