# Can depression screening after birth predict who will develop PMS?

A high depression score after birth may signal increased risk of developing PMS or PMDD in the next year, but the evidence is preliminary and the difference was not statistically significant.

 Early or limited evidence

200 Japanese pregnant women, 178 without prior severe PMS or PMDD

## What they did

Researchers enrolled 200 Japanese pregnant women at 35-36 weeks of pregnancy. One month after delivery, they gave women a depression screening test (EPDS). They then tracked which women developed severe PMS or PMDD by 1 year after delivery.

## What they found

Of 178 women without severe PMS or PMDD before pregnancy, 19.0% (4 of 21) of those with high depression scores and 5.6% (5 of 89) of those with low depression scores developed severe PMS or PMDD within the year. The difference was not statistically significant (p equals 0.07).

## What it means for you

Women with high depression scores after birth may be more likely to develop PMS or PMDD later, but this study was small and the finding was not statistically significant. Much larger studies are needed to confirm this relationship.
