# Is premenstrual syndrome linked to eating disorders in teenage girls?

Yes. Girls with PMS symptoms had higher rates of eating disorders, particularly those with psychological and behavioral symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

210 girls aged 14 to 18 in public high schools in Chabahar city

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 210 teenage girls in public high schools about their PMS and eating disorder symptoms. The data was collected in the first quarter of 2025.

## What they found

There was a positive and significant relationship between both psychological-behavioral and physical PMS symptoms and eating disorders, including eating habits problems, bulimia nervosa, and loss of control over eating. Psychological-behavioral symptoms were particularly associated.

## What it means for you

The study suggests PMS and eating disorders may be linked in teenagers. However, because this is a cross-sectional study (a snapshot, not following people over time), we cannot say whether PMS causes eating disorders or vice versa. The study was conducted in one city only.
