# How common are PMS and PMDD in young women, and are they connected to depression?

Two-thirds of young women have some PMS symptoms, about 1 in 10 meet the criteria for PMDD, and women with worse PMS or PMDD are significantly more likely to have depression.

 Moderate study design

118 female nursing students and staff in rural India, aged 18-40 years

## What they did

Prospective cohort study. 118 female nursing students and staff aged 18 to 40 years in rural India tracked their symptoms daily for 3 months. Researchers recorded symptoms, assessed for PMDD using standard diagnostic criteria, and screened for depression.

## What they found

Some PMS symptoms were observed in 67% of participants. A diagnosis of PMDD was made in 10%. Depressive symptoms were present in 28% of the sample. Of those with depressive symptoms, 46.4% had major depression. Major depression was significantly associated with both the severity of PMS symptoms and the presence of PMDD.

## What it means for you

Most young women experience some premenstrual symptoms, but only about 1 in 10 have PMDD. The connection between PMS severity, PMDD, and depression is important. Women with worse PMS or PMDD should be screened for depression. However, this study was done in rural India, so results may not apply to women in other countries.
