# Which factors predict how severe a woman's PMS will be?

Family history of PMS, mother's education level, type of college, and menstrual cycle length all predicted PMS severity. Weight and menstrual flow duration did not.

 Early or limited evidence

250 university students at Banha University in Egypt

## What they did

Researchers surveyed 250 university students at Banha University. They used a structured questionnaire, visual analogue scale, and symptom assessment tool to measure PMS severity and identify which demographic and reproductive factors predicted how severe their PMS was.

## What they found

Significant predictors of severe PMS were: mother's level of education, family history of PMS, menstrual cycle intervals, and type of college. Menstrual irregularities, BMI (weight), and duration of menstrual flow were not significantly related to PMS severity.

## What it means for you

Family history and mother's education may indicate genetic or family environmental factors affecting PMS severity. The findings were limited to one university in Egypt.
