Survey study, 2010

# Can doctors use a simplified homeopathic protocol to treat PMS?

Yes, doctors can use the protocol in daily practice and it is feasible to implement. However, it helped some women significantly but not all, so more research is needed to understand which women benefit.

 Early or limited evidence

38 women with PMS treated by homeopathic doctors

## What they did

20 homeopathic doctors used a protocol with 11 selected homeopathic medicines to treat 38 women with PMS. Women tracked symptoms daily over two menstrual cycles and were assessed at 3 months.

## What they found

Of 30 women with valid symptom records, 12 had at least 50% reduction in symptoms, 6 had 30-50% reduction, and 12 had less than 30% reduction or symptoms got worse. Doctors liked the protocol and followed it mostly well. Recruiting patients was difficult.

## What it means for you

The protocol is workable for homeopathic doctors to use, but we do not yet know how well it actually works or which women it helps most. The study was small and took 9 months to recruit only 38 women.
