Survey study, 2017

# Are vitamin D and magnesium levels lower in women with PMS than in women without it?

Yes. Women with PMS had much lower vitamin D and somewhat lower magnesium levels than women without PMS, and the two measurements were positively linked.

 Early or limited evidence

85 unmarried women aged 18 to 28 in Pakistan, divided into PMS cases and healthy controls

## What they did

Comparative study of 85 unmarried women aged 18 to 28, split into a PMS group and a control group. During the luteal phase, researchers measured serum vitamin D (25-hydroxy cholecalciferol) and serum magnesium in both groups.

## What they found

Vitamin D was much lower in PMS cases (14.88 ±2.39) than controls (26.20 ±4.30), p=0.0001, with some PMS cases as low as 8 ng/dl. Magnesium was also lower in PMS cases (1.72 ±0.31) than controls (1.84 ±0.12), p=0.02. Vitamin D and magnesium levels were positively correlated (r=0.24, p=0.02).

## What it means for you

Low vitamin D and low magnesium may both play a role in PMS, and the two seem connected. The study only compared two groups at one hospital and was fairly small, so it cannot prove that low levels cause PMS.
