# How should PMDD be treated with antidepressants?

SSRIs and venlafaxine are effective for PMDD at normal doses taken either every day or intermittently during the luteal phase. Both dosing schedules work at normal doses but low doses do not.

 Moderate study design

Women with PMDD and depression-related conditions specific to women.

## What they did

This is a review of medical research on depression in women and conditions specific to women, including PMDD.

## What they found

Antidepressants (SSRIs and venlafaxine) demonstrate efficacy in PMDD. Both continuous daily dosing and intermittent dosing work at usual dosages but not at low dosages.

## What it means for you

For women with PMDD, antidepressants at normal doses work whether taken continuously or intermittently. A limitation is that this is a review of existing research rather than a new study.
