# What helps prevent premenstrual syndrome in adolescent girls?

Girls who exercise weekly, come from higher-income families, and have more educated mothers are more likely to adopt behaviors that prevent or reduce PMS symptoms. However, overall adoption of preventive behaviors was low in this group of high school students.

 Early or limited evidence

255 female high school students in Tehran

## What they did

Cross-sectional study of 255 female high school students in Tehran. Students were selected using random sampling and completed questionnaires about their demographics and their use of preventive behaviors for premenstrual syndrome.

## What they found

The average score for adoption of preventive behaviors was 19.25 out of a possible 50, which was low. Three factors were statistically significantly associated with better adoption of preventive behaviors: weekly physical activity, mother's education level, and family income.

## What it means for you

Girls who exercise weekly, come from higher-income families, and have more educated mothers are more likely to use behaviors that help prevent or reduce PMS. The main limitation is that this study only included high school students in Tehran, and we cannot prove that these factors directly cause better PMS prevention.
