# How aware are college women of PMS and related menstrual conditions?

Most women experience menstrual symptoms but lack knowledge about them. Over 60% did not know about PMS, severe PMS (PMDD), or dysmenorrhea.

 Early or limited evidence

115 female college students at a physiotherapy department in Japan, mean age 20.7 years.

## What they did

Surveyed 115 female college students at a physiotherapy department using a standard rating scale for severe PMS and a questionnaire about menstrual symptoms and daily habits.

## What they found

84% had symptoms before their period. 22.5% had irregular menstrual cycles. 53.2% took painkillers during their period. Over 60% of students said they did not know about dysmenorrhea, PMS, or PMDD.
