# Does having COVID-19 affect premenstrual syndrome symptoms?

Yes. Women who recovered from COVID-19 within the previous 6 months reported more PMS symptoms than women who had never had COVID-19.

 Moderate study design

187 women aged 18-50 in Turkey (66 with COVID-19 history, 121 without)

## What they did

Researchers compared PMS symptoms in 187 women aged 18 to 50 at a hospital clinic between June and August 2021. They separated women into two groups: 66 who had COVID-19 and recovered within the previous 6 months, and 121 who had never had COVID-19. All women completed a PMS assessment.

## What they found

Women in the COVID-19 group reported higher rates of seven symptoms: appetite changes, depressive mood, depressive thoughts, fatigue, sleep changes, anxiety, and menstrual irregularity.

## What it means for you

Women who have had COVID-19 may experience more severe PMS symptoms, and doctors should take these seriously. The study was done during pandemic lockdowns when stress was high, so stress may have played a role. Results come from one hospital in one country, so may not apply elsewhere.
