# Does parecoxib sodium reduce inflammation in rats with PMS-like symptoms?

Yes, in laboratory rats, the medication reduced inflammation markers in both the uterine lining and brain. This is early research and has not been tested in women yet.

 Early or limited evidence

36 laboratory rats

## What they did

Animal study with 36 rats divided into three groups: normal, PMS-like symptoms (created by 7 days of restraint stress), and parecoxib sodium treatment. The medication was given on days 5, 6, and 7 of the stress period.

## What they found

Parecoxib sodium reduced COX-2 expression (an inflammation marker) in the uterine lining by 32 percent (0.31 versus 0.46) and PGE2 by 18.9 percent (0.39 versus 0.49). In the brain, it reduced COX-2 by 20.8 percent (0.72 versus 0.91) and PGE2 by 18 percent (0.92 versus 1.13).

## What it means for you

A medication may help reduce inflammation linked to PMS. This is very early laboratory research with animals. We cannot know yet whether this would actually help women with PMS.
