# How do PMS and PMDD affect work life?

In this study, 19.5% of women had PMS and 31.1% had PMDD. Women who couldn't take time off work but wanted to had more severe symptoms.

 Early or limited evidence

466 women with premenstrual symptoms

## What they did

A cross-sectional study of 466 women with premenstrual symptoms. They collected data online using questionnaires about symptoms and coping strategies.

## What they found

19.5% had PMS and 31.1% had PMDD. Women with higher income had lower rates of both conditions. Employed women who didn't take time off work but wanted to were more likely to have severe symptoms. Women with PMDD who struggled to communicate or adjust their energy had lower work efficiency and poor relationships with coworkers.

## What it means for you

PMS and PMDD affect work life, especially for women unable to take time off. One limitation: this was a single cross-sectional study in one country, so we cannot prove PMS caused the work problems.

Aim: This study investigated the impact of PMS, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), and coping with premenstrual symptoms on work life. Materials and Methods: This study was designed cross-sectionally. The sample consisted of 466 women with premenstrual symptoms. Data were collected online using the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool and the Premenstrual Coping Measure. Results: The prevalence of PMS and PMDD was 19.5%, and 31.1%, respectively. Participants coped moderately with premenstrual symptoms. Participants with a higher income had significantly lower PMS and PMDD rates than others. Employed women who did not take time off from work to cope with premenstrual symptoms and wanted the legal right to take time off to cope with premenstrual symptoms were more likely to have severe premenstrual symptoms, PMS and PMDD. Women experiencing PMDD who were unable to cope with premenstrual symptoms because they were unable to “communicate” and “adjust energy” had a negative impact on their work efficiency or productivity and relationships with coworkers. A negative correlation existed between working time per day and "adjusting energy” subscale scores. Conclusions: Women should screen for premenstrual symptoms on work life. Policymakers should develop legislation with premenstrual symptoms.
