## What they did

This is a clinical overview article describing PMS and PMDD and reviewing what is known about their causes and treatments. It is not a clinical trial reporting original research results.

## What they found

PMS involves physical and psychological symptoms during the luteal phase that disappear with menstruation. PMDD is similar but with more psychological symptoms. The cause is unknown. Randomized placebo-controlled trials have found that SSRIs and oral contraceptives with drosperinone help both conditions.

## What it means for you

This article provides background information rather than original research results. It suggests two types of treatment are supported by evidence but does not provide specific numbers or findings from a single study.
