# Is there a link between PMS symptoms and eating problems?

Yes, a weak one. Four out of five adolescents (79.6%) had PMS symptoms. Among those with PMS, about 1 in 4 (23.1%) also had eating problems. As PMS symptoms increased, eating problems increased slightly.

 Early or limited evidence

250 adolescents ages 15-21

## What they did

Researchers asked 250 adolescents ages 15-21 via online questionnaire about their PMS symptoms and their eating attitudes. They looked for connections between the two.

## What they found

79.6% of adolescents had PMS symptoms and 20.4% had eating attitude problems. Among those with PMS symptoms, 23.1% also had eating attitude disorders. There was a weak positive relationship between PMS symptom severity and eating problems.

## What it means for you

There appears to be a weak link between PMS and eating concerns in adolescents. This is just one observation with no control group, so we cannot say PMS causes eating problems. About 1 in 4 teenagers with PMS also struggle with eating attitudes.

79.6%

had PMS symptoms

23.1%

with PMS also had eating problems

20.4%

had eating problems overall
