Survey study, 2016

# Is the severity of PMS that women perceive related to their knowledge and actual recorded symptoms?

Women with more knowledge about PMS perceived severity differently, but their perceived severity did not match what they actually recorded in a daily diary.

 Early or limited evidence

55 first-year female university students in Iran living in dormitories

## What they did

Study of 55 first-year female university students living in dormitories in Iran using questionnaires on PMS knowledge, attitudes, and perceived severity plus a daily registration calendar to track actual symptoms.

## What they found

Knowledge about PMS was significantly correlated with perceived severity (p equals 0.009, correlation minus 0.35). There was no significant correlation between attitude and perceived severity (p equals 0.54, correlation 0.08). There was no significant difference between perceived PMS severity and severity recorded in the daily calendar (p equals 0.86, correlation 0.02).

## What it means for you

What women think their PMS severity is may not match what they actually experience day to day. More knowledge about PMS is associated with different perceptions of severity. This is a very small sample from one university in Iran, so results may not generalize to other groups.
