# Does a specific hormonal birth control help PMS in teenage girls?

Yes, teenage girls taking this hormone combination had significantly fewer PMS symptoms after 6 months. Pain before and during menstruation significantly decreased.

 Early or limited evidence

50 girls aged 14-18 with PMS and regular menstrual cycles (25-32 days)

## What they did

Researchers gave 50 teenage girls aged 14-18 with PMS a hormonal birth control containing 3 mg of drospirenone and 20 micrograms of ethinylestradiol daily for 6 months. Researchers tracked changes in PMS symptoms and menstruation.

## What they found

The girls had a significant decrease in PMS symptoms with the hormone treatment. Pain before and during menstruation significantly decreased. The amount and intensity of menstrual bleeding decreased. Overall quality of life significantly improved.

## What it means for you

This suggests a specific hormonal birth control may help reduce PMS symptoms in teenage girls and make periods less painful and less heavy. The main limitation is that there was no control group to compare with, so we cannot be completely sure the improvements were due to the medication. The sample was also relatively small (50 girls).
