# Does PMS affect female students' academic performance?

Yes. Over 95% of female students had at least one PMS symptom, and 67.88% reported that PMS caused moderate to severe disruption to their studies.

 Early or limited evidence

130 female students

## What they did

Researchers studied 130 female students using a questionnaire. They asked students how often they had PMS symptoms, how much these symptoms disrupted their studies, and what support services they knew about.

## What they found

Over 95% of respondents experienced at least one PMS symptom. 67.88% of students reported that PMS caused moderate to severe interference with their academic activities. There was a clear relationship between symptom severity and how much academic work was disrupted.

## What it means for you

PMS affects most female students' academic performance, with roughly two-thirds experiencing moderate to severe disruption. Better menstrual health education and school support could help. However, the abstract does not specify the location or age of participants, limiting how broadly these findings apply.

## About the study

Original title To analyze how Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) impacts female students' academic performance Authors Wing Yan Yip Journal Interdisciplinary Humanities and Communication Studies Year 2026 Study design Survey study What was tested Impact of PMS on academic performance assessed via questionnaire Open access Yes Read the paper [doi.org/10.61173/09e1bp87](https://doi.org/10.61173/09e1bp87) Original abstract

This study aimed to examine the impact of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) on the academic performance of female students. While premenstrual syndrome is common, its influence on academic outcomes is often overlooked in the educational sector. This research employs a mixedmethod approach, including a literature review and a questionnaire survey. A total of 130 valid responses were analyzed, with the questionnaire inquiring about symptom frequency, the degree to which symptoms disrupted daily studies, and students’ awareness of available support options. The data were analyzed using correlation and chi-square tests to assess whether symptom severity was associated with academic performance. Findings indicate that over 95% of respondents experienced at least one PMS symptom, and 67.88% of female students reported that PMS caused moderate to severe interference with their academic activities. Correlation analysis showed a significant positive relationship between symptom severity and academic disruption (r = 0.551, p < 0.01). The chisquare test further confirmed a significant association between PMS symptoms and academic interference. This study concludes that PMS significantly and measurably affects academic performance. Improving menstrual health education and school support systems could help lessen PMS's impact on students’ academic success.
