# Can antidepressant and anti-epilepsy medications help premenstrual dysphoria?

Yes, it appeared to help. Women with premenstrual dysphoria responded well to a combination of antidepressant and anti-epilepsy medications. Most participants had epilepsy, so we need to test this in women without epilepsy to be sure.

 Early or limited evidence

Women with premenstrual dysphoria, mostly with epilepsy

## What they did

Women with premenstrual dysphoria, most of whom had epilepsy, were systematically evaluated and treated with antidepressants and anti-epilepsy medications combined.

## What they found

Their premenstrual dysphoria responded well to the combined medication treatment.

## What it means for you

The two conditions may share features that respond to the same treatment. However, since most women in the study had epilepsy, we do not know if this treatment works equally well for women with premenstrual dysphoria who do not have epilepsy. More research in women without epilepsy is needed.
