# What should be the standard way to diagnose premenstrual disorders?

An international group of experts created consensus recommendations for unified diagnostic criteria and measurement methods for premenstrual disorders.

## What they did

International multidisciplinary experts met face-to-face in Montreal to review existing definitions and diagnostic criteria for premenstrual disorders. They corresponded extensively after the meeting. The group became the International Society for Premenstrual Disorders (ISPMD), holding its inaugural meeting in September 2008.

## What they found

The experts published consensus recommendations for unified diagnostic criteria for premenstrual disorders, defined as somatic (physical) and psychological symptoms occurring during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and resolving during menstruation. These were intended to inform future versions of the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-5).

## What it means for you

This creates a unified approach to diagnosing premenstrual disorders. Until now there were no universally accepted diagnostic criteria. This consensus should help make research and clinical care more consistent.
