Study, 2025

# Does learning to cope better with premenstrual symptoms improve quality of life?

Yes. University students who were better at managing their premenstrual symptoms reported higher quality of life. However, 87.2% had never received any help or counseling for managing PMS.

 Moderate study design

287 female university students in Turkey

## What they did

Researchers gave questionnaires to 287 female university students in Turkey asking about how they cope with premenstrual symptoms and their quality of life. They measured coping strategies using a premenstrual coping scale and quality of life using a standard quality of life scale.

## What they found

As students got better at coping with premenstrual symptoms, their quality of life increased. Younger students and those in earlier class years were better at accepting and noticing their premenstrual changes. Students who smoked had lower self-care scores. Students whose first period came at age 14 or older managed their energy better. 87.2% of the 287 students experienced painful periods and had received no counseling for PMS.

## What it means for you

Coping skills matter for quality of life during the menstrual cycle. The main limits are that this was only university students in one country, and the study measured whether better coping went with better quality of life, but didn't test whether teaching coping skills actually improved things.
