# Who finds cervical laser surgery painful?

Young women who have never given birth, are anxious, or have a history of painful periods experience more pain during cervical surgery. Premenstrual syndrome scores did not predict surgical pain.

 Early or limited evidence

Women undergoing outpatient cervical laser surgery

## What they did

Researchers studied women undergoing outpatient cervical laser surgery and compared their pain levels to various factors including age, anxiety, menstrual history, PMS scores, and menstrual cycle phase.

## What they found

Young, anxious, childless women with a history of painful periods (dysmenorrhea) experienced the most surgical pain. Premenstrual syndrome scores, menstrual cycle phase, and other factors tested did not predict pain levels.

## What it means for you

Anxiety and a history of painful periods are stronger predictors of surgical pain than PMS status. Women can be reassured based on whether they've had children and their dysmenorrhea history.

nulliparity

never gave birth; predicted pain

dysmenorrhea

painful periods; predicted pain

PMS scores

did not predict pain
