Study, 2011

Does the migraine medicine sumamigren work the same way for menstrual and non-menstrual migraines?

Yes, sumamigren worked equally well for both menstrual and non-menstrual migraine attacks. The severity of symptoms and disability from attacks did not differ between the two types.

Early or limited evidence 27 women with an average age of 35 years who had both menstrual-associated and non-menstrual migraines

What they did

Researchers studied 27 women with an average age of 35 years who had migraine attacks both linked and not linked to their menstrual cycle. Women kept headache diaries recording when migraines occurred. Researchers measured how bad each attack was and how disabled women felt, then treated both types of attacks with sumamigren and compared how well the medicine worked.

What they found

The clinical characteristics and level of disability from migraine attacks did not differ between menstrual-associated and non-menstrual migraine attacks. Sumamigren was equally effective at reducing disability from both types.

What it means for you

If you have migraines, this suggests that whether a migraine is linked to your menstrual cycle or not, sumamigren should work the same way to treat it. However, this was a small study of only 27 women who were all around age 35, so results may not apply to women of other ages.
