Researchers gave students a structured questionnaire asking about PMDD symptoms (physical, psychological, and interpersonal) and how these affected their academic quality of life. They also asked about family history of PMDD.

What they found

98.7% had physical PMDD symptoms, 97.5% had psychological symptoms, and 58.2% had interpersonal symptoms. About 46.9% said PMDD affected their academic quality of life. Those with a family history of PMDD had more physical and psychological symptoms.

What it means for you

PMDD is extremely common in this student population and significantly affects academic life for many. Family history appears to be associated with more severe symptoms. The main limitations are this was one college in Saudi Arabia with health sciences students specifically, so results may not apply to other populations or countries.
