Study, 2002

Do women singers experience larynx changes before their period?

Yes. Women singers with improper voice technique had more extensive larynx changes before menses compared to healthy singers, and these changes improved after proper technique was adopted.

Early or limited evidence 30 female classical singers (15 with voice abuse, 15 healthy)

What they did

Examined 15 female classical singers with voice abuse and 15 healthy female classical singers before and outside menses using laryngoscopy, laryngostroboscopy, and electroglottography. Later re-examined the singers with voice abuse after they stopped using improper technique.

What they found

Before menses, singers with voice abuse showed more extensive larynx changes compared to healthy singers. After stopping improper voice use, larynx changes decreased. The larynx changes were the result of combined voice abuse and menses-related effects.

What it means for you

Voice problems get worse before your period if you're singing with poor technique. This improves when technique is corrected. Laryngeal examination before menstruation could help identify improper singing technique. This was a small study of classical singers only.
