Survey study, 2012

Does a relaxation yoga exercise help reduce PMS symptoms and stress?

Yes, one week of 61-Point Relaxation yoga appeared to reduce physical stress markers and improve mood in women with PMS. The study was very small and lasted only one week.

Early or limited evidence 50 female nurses in reproductive age with and without PMS

What they did

Fifty female nurses were divided into PMS and control groups based on symptoms. They completed a guided 61-Point Relaxation yoga exercise once daily for one week. Heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, cortisol levels, and premenstrual symptoms were measured before and after.

What they found

In women with PMS, the relaxation exercise reversed stress-related increases in heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. All recorded parameters showed reversal of stress-induced changes. Participants reported subjective stress relief and a 'feel good' response.

What it means for you

This relaxation exercise may help with PMS-related stress. However, this is a very small study (50 women) that lasted only one week with no control group for comparison. Larger, longer studies are needed.
