Survey study, 2019
Is poor sleep linked to worse PMS symptoms?
Yes. Women with worse PMS symptoms reported worse sleep quality. The study found that 85.6% of women had some premenstrual symptoms and 36.5% had PMS diagnosed by formal criteria.
What they did
450 female nurses aged 25 to 50 completed questionnaires measuring premenstrual symptoms using the PMTS scale and sleep quality using the PSQI scale.
What they found
85.6% of the 450 women had premenstrual symptoms using ACOG criteria. 36.5% had PMS using DSM criteria. There was a significant positive correlation between PMS severity and poor sleep quality, meaning worse PMS was associated with worse sleep.
What it means for you
Women with worse PMS symptoms tend to have worse sleep. However, this study was done only in nurses and we cannot tell whether PMS causes poor sleep, poor sleep causes PMS, or if other factors cause both. Larger studies are needed to understand the relationship.
