Does aerobic exercise help reduce PMS symptoms?

In this small study, PMS symptom scores were lower after an aerobic exercise program, but because there was no comparison group, we can't be fully sure exercise alone caused the change.

Early or limited evidence 60 nursing students aged 18 to 24 in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, India, with PMS.

What they did

Researchers studied 60 nursing students aged 18 to 24 in Bhilai, Chhattisgarh, India who had premenstrual syndrome. There was no control group. The women did aerobic exercise, and their PMS symptoms were scored before and after using a standard assessment scale.

What they found

Average PMS score went from 87.78±29.630 before the exercise to 80.97±27.359 after it, a statistically significant drop (t=11.010, p<0.001).

What it means for you

This points to aerobic exercise possibly easing PMS symptoms, but the study had no control group, was small, and was done at a single nursing college, so the results may not apply more broadly.
