How common are premenstrual symptoms among adolescent girls?

The study found an average premenstrual symptom score of 44.36 and average coping behavior score of 11.32, but without interpretation of what these scores mean, the practical significance is unclear. The small sample size of 50 limits what we can conclude.

Early or limited evidence 50 adolescent girls (location not specified in abstract)

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 50 adolescent girls using the PMMS questionnaire, selected by purposive sampling. Associations between premenstrual symptoms and coping strategies with demographic and menstrual cycle variables were examined.

What they found

Mean premenstrual symptom score was 44.36 (SD 4.74) and mean coping behavior score was 11.32 (SD 8.43). The study examined associations between premenstrual symptoms and coping strategies with demographic variables including age, age at menarche, cycle duration and frequency, pad use, and information sources about PMS. The authors concluded that education and awareness about PMS and better coping strategies are needed among adolescent girls.

What it means for you

Girls use various coping strategies for premenstrual symptoms, but the study does not clarify which strategies are effective or what symptom levels are concerning. The small sample of 50 girls and lack of interpretation for the symptom and coping scores limits how useful these findings are.
