Survey study, 2022

Does muscle relaxation reduce PMS symptoms?

A specific muscle relaxation technique significantly reduced PMS symptoms in the study group. However, without a control group, we cannot be certain the technique itself caused the improvement.

Early or limited evidence 350 adolescent girls at selected colleges in Bengaluru, India

What they did

One-group pretest-posttest study of 350 adolescent girls at colleges in Bengaluru. All girls received Jacobson's progressive muscle relaxation technique training. PMS symptoms were measured before and after using structured questionnaire and modified PSST tool.

What they found

Mean PMS score decreased from 79.44±15.616 before intervention to 53.73±13.204 after intervention. Paired t-test showed this difference was highly significant (t=31.319, p<0.001).

What it means for you

Muscle relaxation technique appears to reduce PMS symptoms. However, this study had no control group, so we cannot rule out placebo effect or natural improvement over time. Larger studies with control groups are needed to confirm effectiveness.
