Study, 1992

Does endometrium ablation reduce period symptoms?

Yes. Most women had much lighter periods or no period after surgery, took fewer days off work, and had less severe premenstrual symptoms. The improvements lasted at least three years.

Early or limited evidence 64 women who had endometrium ablation surgery starting in July 1986

What they did

A before-and-after study of 64 women. Doctors measured their period heaviness, how many days they missed work, and their premenstrual symptoms before surgery and after endometrium ablation.

What they found

After ablation, most women had either no period or just spotting. The number of days they could not work due to their period decreased. The severity of premenstrual symptoms decreased. These improvements remained stable for at least three years.

What it means for you

Endometrium ablation can reduce period bleeding and premenstrual symptoms for years. The main limit is there was no control group, so we cannot be certain these improvements come only from the surgery rather than other factors or changes over time.
