Is PMDD linked to sleep problems, diet, and academic stress in female medical students?
This study found a clear association between PMDD and poor sleep, and between PMDD and academic burnout in female medical students. However, there was no clear relationship between PMDD and diet.
What they did
Female medical students completed standardized questionnaires about premenstrual symptoms, sleep quality, eating habits, and academic burnout. Researchers looked for associations between PMDD and these other factors.
What they found
A clear association was found between PMDD and poor sleep quality, and between PMDD and academic burnout. No clear relationship was found between PMDD and dietary behaviour.
What it means for you
Among medical students, PMDD appears linked to sleep and academic stress but not diet. Improving sleep and reducing stress might help. Main limits: study was only of medical students (who have high stress and irregular schedules), and shows association, not cause.
