Survey study, 2021
Is the Italian version of a PMS screening tool reliable for identifying women who need treatment?
Yes. The Italian version of the Premenstrual Symptoms Screening Tool is reliable and valid for screening women for PMS and PMDD.
What they did
Translated a screening questionnaire for PMS and PMDD from English to Italian, then tested it with 520 women aged over 18 (average age 23.6) to check whether it works well and gives consistent results.
What they found
Of the 520 women, 337 (64.8%) had no or mild symptoms, 158 (30.4%) screened positive for moderate or severe PMS, and 23 (4.4%) screened positive for PMDD. The tool showed very good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.89) and good test-retest reliability (Spearman's correlation 0.80).
What it means for you
Doctors in Italy can use this questionnaire as a reliable way to screen women for PMS and PMDD. This validation applies only to Italian speakers and only tested the screening tool itself, not any treatments.
