Survey study, 2020
What PMS symptoms do female students have and how severe are they?
Almost all female students had at least one PMS symptom. Most experienced physical symptoms more than psychological ones and used sleep and rest to manage symptoms.
What they did
Cross-sectional descriptive study of 300 female students aged 18-25 in Baghdad at three medical technology institutions. Students completed a questionnaire about their PMS symptoms.
What they found
All 300 participants had at least one PMS symptom. 34.3% reported moderate physical symptoms. 35.3% reported mild psychological symptoms. Most used sleep and rest to relieve symptoms. Physical symptoms were more bothersome than psychological symptoms.
What it means for you
PMS is very common in female students and physical symptoms may cause more trouble than mood symptoms. Sleep and rest are popular ways women try to manage symptoms. This study only looked at students in Baghdad, so findings may not apply to older women or other places.
