Lab study, 2022

Do women with PMS have different levels of calcium and magnesium in their blood?

Women with PMS had no clear difference in calcium levels in the blood compared to women without PMS, but they had a clear difference in magnesium levels.

Early or limited evidence Healthy women aged 18-26 years with regular menstrual cycles

What they did

Researchers compared blood samples from women with and without PMS. Women were aged 18-26 years with regular menstrual cycles. Blood was drawn during the premenstrual phase and tested for calcium and magnesium levels.

What they found

There was no clear difference in calcium levels in the blood between women with PMS and those without PMS. However, there was a clear difference in magnesium levels between the two groups.

What it means for you

This suggests magnesium might be linked to PMS, while calcium doesn't appear to be. The study recommends exercise, diet, and mind-body practices. However, blood was measured only during the premenstrual phase in women aged 18-26, so results might differ for other ages. It's unclear whether magnesium supplements would actually help symptoms.
