Cohort study, 2021

Is PMDD associated with postpartum depression in first-time mothers?

Yes, strongly. Women who developed postpartum depression were much more likely to have PMDD: 81.81% of women with depression had PMDD versus 16% without depression.

Early or limited evidence 72 first-time mothers in India having planned caesarean section

What they did

Prospective cohort study of 72 first-time mothers in India having planned caesarean section. Postpartum depression was screened at days 7, 14, and 42 after delivery using depression questionnaires. PMDD was assessed using DSM-5 criteria.

What they found

30.55% of women developed postpartum depression. PMDD was present in 36.11% overall, but in 81.81% of women with postpartum depression versus 16% of women without it (p<0.0001). Marital satisfaction, planned pregnancy, and no family psychiatric history reduced postpartum depression risk.

What it means for you

Women with PMDD are at much higher risk of postpartum depression. Screening for PMDD could help identify pregnant women who need extra support after delivery. Main limits: very small sample, single location in India, included only women having planned caesarean.
