Does green tea reduce physical PMS symptoms?
Women who drank 3 cups of green tea daily for 3 months reported improvement in physical symptoms like bloating and acne. However, there was no control group, so we cannot be certain green tea caused this improvement.
What they did
100 female medical and dental students aged 18-26, of whom 78 had physical PMS symptoms, were advised to drink 3 cups of green tea daily for 3 months. They reported their symptoms before and after.
What they found
Abdominal bloating was the most common symptom (48.7% of those with PMS), followed by acne (32.1%). After 3 months of green tea consumption, all physical PMS symptoms showed significant improvement (p=0.001).
What it means for you
Green tea may help reduce physical PMS symptoms. The main limitations are no control group exists (symptoms might have improved anyway) and this is a small study of young, healthy university students, which may not represent all women with PMS.
