Survey study, 2024

Are anxiety and depression linked to PMS in female athletes?

Yes, the study found strong links between anxiety and depression with PMS in female athletes. However, this is a small study from one location, so findings may not apply everywhere, and showing a link doesn't prove one causes the other.

Early or limited evidence 64 female athletes (32 from individual combat sports, 32 from team sports) in Punjab

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 64 female athletes (32 from individual combat sports, 32 from team sports) in Punjab. All athletes completed questionnaires about anxiety, depression, and PMS. Researchers analyzed whether these were linked using correlation analysis.

What they found

Strong positive links were found between anxiety and depression with PMS. The correlation was 0.825 for individual combat athletes and 0.964 for team sport athletes (p=0.000), meaning as anxiety and depression scores went up, PMS symptoms also increased.

What it means for you

Anxiety and depression appear closely connected to PMS in female athletes. This is a small single-location study, so it may not apply to athletes everywhere. Finding a link doesn't prove anxiety or depression causes PMS.
