Survey study, 2017

Do women with PMS have lower calcium and does supplementation help?

Women with PMS had lower blood calcium levels and lower daily calcium intake. Calcium supplementation increased blood calcium levels and reduced PMS symptoms.

Early or limited evidence Women with and without PMS

What they did

Measured blood calcium levels, daily calcium intake, and PMS symptoms in women with and without PMS. Some women received calcium supplements.

What they found

Women with PMS had lower average blood calcium levels and lower average daily calcium intake compared to women without PMS. Calcium intake was correlated with blood calcium levels. Calcium supplementation increased blood calcium levels and reduced PMS symptoms.

What it means for you

Low calcium may be related to PMS and supplementation may help reduce symptoms. However, this is a small observational study, not a controlled trial, so we cannot prove that low calcium causes PMS.
