Case-control study, 1997

Do women with severe breast pain and swelling have worse PMS symptoms?

Yes. Women with cyclic mastopathy reported more severe PMS symptoms, especially water retention and breast symptoms, as well as mood changes, behavior changes, and concentration problems.

Early or limited evidence 34 women with severe cyclic mastopathy and 29 women without breast symptoms

What they did

Case-control study comparing 34 women with severe cyclic breast pain and swelling to 29 women without breast symptoms. Both groups tracked breast pain, swelling, and PMS symptoms for one menstrual cycle and reported past breast health.

What they found

Women with cyclic mastopathy had more doctor visits for breast lumpiness, more mammograms, and more biopsies. PMS symptoms were significantly more severe in the cyclic mastopathy group, particularly water retention and breast symptoms (p<0.001), and also negative mood, behavior changes, and concentration problems (p<0.05).
