Randomised trial, 2005
Does acupuncture combined with Chinese medicine help premenstrual mouth ulcers?
Yes. Acupuncture and moxibustion combined with Chinese medicine was effective in 91.7% of women, compared to 64.5% with Chinese medicine alone.
What they did
A randomized trial where 79 women with premenstrual mouth ulcers were divided into two groups. The treatment group (n=48) received acupuncture, moxibustion, and Chinese medicine. The control group (n=31) received Chinese medicine alone. Therapeutic effects were observed and compared.
What they found
The effective rate was 91.7% in the treatment group and 64.5% in the control group, with a significant difference between groups (p < 0.05).
What it means for you
Acupuncture and moxibustion combined with medicine may be more effective for premenstrual mouth ulcers. However, we cannot tell if improvement is from acupuncture or from receiving more treatment attention. The study was conducted in China using traditional medicine concepts. The control group was smaller (31 vs 48), which could affect results.
