Survey study, 2022

What are the differences in mood between PMDD, PMS, and no or mild PMS?

Women with PMDD had significantly higher anxiety and depression than those with PMS or no/mild PMS. This is a cross-sectional study, so it shows differences but cannot prove what causes them.

Early or limited evidence 195 women divided into PMDD, PMS, and no/mild PMS groups

What they did

Cross-sectional study of 195 women divided into three groups based on PMS severity. All participants completed questionnaires measuring anxiety, depression, cognitive failures, and life satisfaction.

What they found

Women with PMDD had significantly higher anxiety and depression scores than women with PMS or no/mild PMS (p<0.05). Cognitive failure scores also differed significantly across groups, but pairwise comparisons were not statistically significant.

What it means for you

This study shows that PMDD involves more severe anxiety and depression than PMS or no/mild PMS. The main limitation is the cross-sectional design, which means the study is observational only and cannot show whether PMDD causes these mood changes.
