Study, 2021

How much PMS did health sciences students experience during the COVID pandemic?

The study found that students experienced severe PMS symptoms on average. About two-thirds were aged 21-22, and most did not smoke or drink alcohol.

Moderate study design 500 female health sciences students at a Turkish university

What they did

Five hundred female students at a university completed surveys about their PMS symptoms and personal habits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers used a standard PMS scale to measure how severe their symptoms were.

What they found

The students' average PMS scale score was 173.00, indicating severe PMS. About 66.8% were aged 21-22. Most did not smoke (85.3%) or drink alcohol (81.6%). About 61.4% had normal weight.

What it means for you

The study shows these university students experienced severe PMS during the pandemic. Changes in eating patterns and pandemic stress may have made symptoms worse. The findings only apply to students at one university in Turkey, so they may not be true for all women.
